La Chambre renversée (The upside-down bedroom)
La Chambre Renversée is inspired by the fairytale Barbe Bleue (Bluebeard) written by Charles Perrault in the late seventeenth century. In this cautionary tale, the seventh wife of Bluebeard opens a forbidden door, only to discover that Bluebeard has murdered his six previous wives and hidden them away behind that door...
Although Bluebeard never makes a physical appearance into the piece, he enacts a visible pressure onto the other characters. The space, the sounds, the movements, the lights and the shadow continuously betray his presence, though he never steps a foot onto the stage.
Three hanging lights are fully integrated into the choreography and the dramaturgy of La Chambre Renversée , giving them a role as important as the dancers. The lights embody Bluebeard and what it represents: the forbidden place, the hidden truth, the rule we can't understant ...
The penitence becomes suffering,
The transgression becomes knowledge,
The persecution becomes rebellion.
